Why Are Copper Pipes Used in Air Conditioners?

             With the development of technology, air conditioners have become an essential part of every household. However, to ensure the long-term stable use of air conditioning systems, whether it's a cabinet unit, central air conditioning, or split wall-mounted units, aside from the quality of the air conditioner itself, the type of air conditioning pipes and refrigerant is also a crucial component.

      The piping of the refrigerant system is made of copper tubes, as the corrosive nature of the refrigerant itself makes rubber pipes like PPR and PEX unusable, leaving only steel pipes, aluminum pipes, and copper pipes as options.

      So why do we choose copper pipes as the piping for refrigerant systems?

      1. Copper pipes are installed as whole pipes and have flared ends, providing good pressure resistance and reducing the likelihood of refrigerant leakage.

      2. They have good ductility, are resistant to oxidation, have strong thermal conductivity, and high heat exchange efficiency.

      Disadvantages of steel pipes: They cannot be installed as whole pipes, and because the refrigerant system pipes contain high-pressure gas and liquid, the joints are prone to rust and aging.

      Disadvantages of aluminum pipes: They cannot be flared, have poor pressure resistance, are not resistant to oxidation, and are likely to develop leakage points.

      From the above, we can roughly understand why copper pipes are chosen as the connecting material in refrigerant systems. So what are the classifications of copper pipes?

      Copper pipes can be divided into copper pipes and brass pipes, with copper pipes being widely used in the refrigeration field. Brass pipes are primarily used for water pipes and water-related connectors.

      The grades of copper pipes can be divided into TP2, T2, and TU1.

      TP2 is phosphorous deoxidized copper with a phosphorus content of 0.015-0.04%, offering excellent welding performance. T2 is pure copper with a copper content exceeding 99.90%, providing excellent electrical conductivity. TU1 is oxygen-free copper with a copper content ≥99.97%, extremely low oxygen and impurity content, high purity, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, good ductility, and excellent processing, welding, corrosion resistance, and cold resistance. However, its high production requirements and cost make its price significantly higher than other types of copper pipes.

      So how do we distinguish the quality of copper pipes?

      Touch: Check whether the inner and outer walls of the copper pipes are smooth and clean, and look for defects such as sand holes, oxidation, or cracks.

      Look: Observe the color of the copper pipes; copper pipes generally have a reddish hue, while brass pipes generally have a lighter color.
